Film Opening Research #2 - How the Grinch Stole Christmas

How the Grinch Stole Christmas Opening Scene

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?
There are six titles displayed during the opening sequences to the film: Imagine Entertainment, Universal Pictures, A Brian Grazer Production, A Ron Howard Film, Jim Carrey, and Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The images prioritized in the opening sequences are the inside of a snowflake falling down onto a snow covered town called Whoville. Then the movie transitions to images of the town and the Whos that inhabit it. The town is decorated extensively in Christmas decorations, and all of the Whos are full of Chirstmas cheer.

What connotations do the images carry?

The images carry a cheerful and majestic connotation.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

Genre is reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset because of the way the beginning of the film is set up in the inside of a snowflake. Beginning in the snowflake reinforces the Grinch's fantasy genre part. The opening also contains the voice of a narrator introducing Whoville and the Whos that inhabit it. Although I enjoy the fantasy genre displayed in this movie, I especially love the comedy displayed in the movie.

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

The film establishes an enigma from the outset by taking the audience through a scenery they are unable to recognize: the inside of a snowflake. The opening then cuts to a view of Whoville, which the audience has never seen before, so the audience becomes curious about the setting of the movie.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The strategies used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience are the use of Computer Generated Images (CGI). The film also included a background voice that is narrating while the movie contains images of Whoville. This use of a narrator really appeals to the children and family audience.

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

Technology has been used effectively because the overall scenery of Whoville is CGI, which helps to convey the Christmas spirit in the town or lack there of in the Grinch. The opening also begins with an establishing shot of Whoville, which helps to give context to the surroundings of the characters in the film. The opening also includes quite a few cuts, which provides a clear transition from one shot to the next, and this is also helpful in keeping up with the narrator.
